Welcome to the Iditarod Trail Kennel!

Here are the members of our kennel and those who are in active training for the Iditarod 2011 adventure to Nome, Alaska! These canine athletes also provide tours of the historic Iditarod Trail in Knik. Feel free to drop by the kennel and meet these fantastic dogs of the Iditarod!

AAFES

Aafes is the "runt" of the pack, but don't let her small frame fool ya! She can run like the wind! AAFES was so named in 2002 when she was just a new-born puppy at Elmendorf Air Force Base near Anchorage, and one of the employees of the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) so named this little dog! (The Army and Air Force Exchange Service does an outstanding service in providing for our troops and their families, and is not one of our sponsors!) Aafes (the dog) received much attention in March of 2007 during the Iditarod sled dog race. Aafes's team had hit hurricane force winds while crossing the challenging mountainous terrain while crossing the Alaska Range. During the chaos, Aafes became detached from the team and remained lost in the rugged Alaska Range for eleven days! Two private pilots from Anchorage (Manny and Allen) flew several flights into the rugged country looking for the dog, and finally found Aafes near Rohn (Pop. 0). Aafes returned to Rohn with another dog team in March of 2009 and helped recover a mountain bike which had been used to search for her two years earlier!

Andy

This four-year-old male was acquired from another kennel in the early part of 2009. He was a wild mutt when we first got him, but he has not only transformed into a strong sled dog, but a formidable leader! He's gifted with a lot of energy, and absolutely loves to run!

Ava
This four-year-old female is the sister to Mia and both of these dogs joined the kennel in June of 2010. She is somewhat shy, but that does not impede on her performance in harness. Ava is due to give birth to puppies in September, 2010. (She was bred with Mick!)

Colo
This eight year old male was named in honor of a friend in Nome who has the same name.  Cole (the dog) is a great dog and runs in team as well as in lead. He has ran several hundred miles in harness and is still going strong!

Elvis

Hebe (Brother of Sheba, son of Tina and grandson of legendary Cymba. Owned by Dan Golden).

Indy

Mia

Mick

Nick

Nick was named in honor of another great dog by the same name who was the Jones Family dog back in the 1950's and 60's in the Great State of Utah.  The current Nick is one of only three dogs on our Iditarod 2011 team which has completed the entire Iditarod trail  route from Wasilla to Nome, in 2004.  The other two dogs making this remarkable achievement is Nick's brother Raz and Thunder. Nick has been on countless adventures over the years and is featured in the book "Winning the Iditarod". He is the son of Sasha who is retired and living a good life in Anchorage. Nick belongs to kennel supporter Manny in Anchorage and is on "semi-permanent" loan to us! Nick is an outstanding team dog and athlete. He's not all that focused when running in lead however, as he easily gets distracted along the trail and can get the whole team messed up at times. (i.e. when a cat crosses the trail ~ it can be chaos if Nick is in lead!) This dog is also a great pet and is house trained! Nick is eight years old and still going strong! "Nick Quick of Knik"  has his own web site  which  can be found  at:

Nellie

Poncho

Raz

Ruth

Sheba

(This dog is a command leader. Spayed sister to Hebe. Belongs to Dan Golden of Anchorage).

Sunny

Sunny
This four-year-old male joined our kennel on July 22, 2010. This dog has an incredible very high energy level. He and Mick are the team's "cheerleaders"; encouraging the team to run fast and furious. When the team stops on the trail for a break, it is always Sunny who remains standing and barking which can be annoying to the musher at times. This dog is gifted with too much bark over trivial matters, but otherwise a very valuable asset to the team!

Thunder (Born 2001, daughter of Indy, runs in lead, has finished the Iditarod in 2004).
